Diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD)
Dental functional diagnostics involves analysing the craniomandibular system, which comprises the teeth, the chewing muscles and the jaw joints. Signs of a temporomandibular disorder (TMD) – a dysfunction of the jaw joint – include a clicking jaw, general muscular tension, or pain in the jaw, neck and back. If you experience these symptoms or a TMD is suspected, we begin with a thorough analysis at our practice in Bogenhausen in order to find the right solution for you. Jaw joint disorders often call for an interdisciplinary approach, which is why we work closely with orthopaedic specialists, osteopaths and physiotherapists.
Splint therapy for jaw joint disorders
In most cases, craniomandibular dysfunction is initially treated with braces or is used in conjunction with therapy. A special upward brace is individually tailored after measuring your jaw position and worn during sleep. This brace relieves the jaw joints and jaw muscles, reduces teeth grinding, and so alleviates pain and tension. When worn regularly, it can provide long-term relief from symptoms. Botulinum toxin, also known as Botox®, reduces muscle activity in the jaw area and can thus relieve pain and improve jaw mobility.
